Nick Jr. Discriminates Against Christians!!!

December 16th, 2008 by Chris

Special thanks to the Atlanta Catholic Homeschool discussion group on Yahoo for tipping my wife off on this.  Over at Nick Jr.’s website, they’ve got a “game” called FreeDraw….and guess what.  It’s anything but “free.”  You see, like many paint/draw programs, there’s a text tool.  But the text tool features friendly, built-in CENSORSHIP!!!  This is very disturbing.  When you use the text tool to type certain words, and then click outside the text area, your word will change to “sorry, word blocked.”  Here’s a screen shot:

Here are words my wife and I have tried so far that have been blocked:

Christmas
Jesus
Pope
Mass
Christian
Jew
George Bush
President Bush
Dick Cheney
Mother of God
God
Virgin Mary
Allah
Merry Christmas
Rosh Hashanah
Buddha
War on Terror
Laura Bush
in fact, no matter the context, “bush” is blocked…

On the not blocked list, we have:
Islam
Muslim
Yom Kippur
Hannukah
Mohammed
Ramadan
Barack Obama
Joe Biden
Planned Parenthood

We could go on, but you get the idea.  For fun, feel free to type into the comment box anything else you might find to be blocked.  Someone with an anti-Christian / left-wing political agenda got in there and set up the filtering tools to meet his opinions.  Nickelodeon is owned by Viacom, so, some underling has set this up.  The big wigs will appreciate knowing about it.

Bill Donohue will also appreciate knowing about it…and I will be passing it along to him as well.

The links are there for a reason folks…don’t sit and stew, do something!!

Benedict was blocked, John Paul II was not. Neither were the words abortion, porn, and homosexual. However I did find a loophole: type it in Latin and it works (unless of course you type ‘homo’, as in ‘homo factus est’).

I’m only responding to this as someone who has had to try to do filters – and I’ve only done it for adults, not kids. I’m not condoning what this does, but it boils down more to laziness mostly and not ill intent. They’re matching substrings and not whole words… so, the word “mass” contains the word “ass”, so it’s blocked. And if ANYTHING that you type matches a word in their “bad word list”, the whole thing gets blocked.

Christmas – root “Christ”, probably on ’swear’ list.

Jesus – probably on ’swear’ list.

    Pope – no clue.

    Mass – root ‘ass’

President Bush -contains ‘bush’, slang for female crotch. Crotch blocked as wel laughing

George Washington – contains ‘wash’ which is for some reason blocked.

Tax cut – the word ‘cut’ is blocked.

Talk Radio – the word ‘alk’ is blocked. No clue.

pro-life – anything with a dash in it seems to be blocked and for the record ‘english-only’ is blocked too

    George – ‘org’ is blocked.

They most likely have 2 lists, a ‘bad word’ list and a ‘protect the children’ list. It’s for kids. They’re lazy. They don’t think anyone will notice. To prove it, their own NAME is blocked, because ‘nick’ is blocked, similar to cut. I just don’t want to set a bad precedent with them, as it’s easy to write stuff off as “oh, those crazy Catholics!”, especially when they get all this backlash from something silly. Then when something really IS wrong, we’ll be ignored.

    My 2 cents.

interesting that some jewish and muslim words are on the bad list and some are on the good list. are they only halfway discriminating against judaism and islam.

  4. Tim Says:

well now we can say f**k, sex, and of course our catholic words on nick jr. the filter must have been removed all together.
