Something disturbing to hear from your baptist class teacher
So, we have a daughter due to arrive within the next couple of weeks, and we dutifully went to the parish baptism class this morning after Mass. Shortly, we found out that since we’d been once we didn’t need to go again (our nearly-three-year-old was baptised at one month of age.) We were discussing how it’s going to be difficult because the baby is due to arrive on January 25, and yet Lent starts just a few days after; our parish only baptises the last Sunday of each month during Mass, and as a rule doesn’t do private baptism. In addition, no baptisms during penitential seasons. That means more than likely, it’ll be the Easter Vigil or the last Sunday in March before she can be baptised.
So the couple who teaches the baptism class says, “well, the Church is trying to get people away from the mentality that if you don’t get your baby baptised right away, terrible things will happen.”
Sad…

Well, that isn’t the right answer, of course. But you do understand the baptism hiatus during Lent.
Now, my daughter who was born Christmas morning, was slated to be baptized before Lent but a winter storm hit and we cancelled for the sake of those traveling a distance.
We had to wait until after Lent to reschedule. And, in fact, there was such a waiting list that we postponed until Father’s Day … which was a nice memento for my husband!
Worry only with good reason, don’t worry needlessly. Yes, people in ministry say stupid things. But you know better – don’t let it bother you.

Naturally, we aren’t worried. I was mainly pointing out that it was odd that a couple who’s been teaching a baptism class for 8 years would say that. The reason for the Lent hiatus is because it’s a penitential season, and we should keep celebration to a minimum.
Though, as my wife points out, it’s not so much a celebration as it is about the soul of the baby, washing away original sin.

I’m strumming my air guitar here. (that means that if my blog hadn’t gotten wiped away, I would have put a post on this in my “In the Spirit of Vatican II” series.)
